A joist support is the horizontal beam that supports the floor joists. The joist support helps reinforce the floor so it can handle the weight load it needs to. In some cases additional joist supports will have to be installed before there can be extra heavy objects on the floor. This is especially true if you are planning on getting a grand piano or something of the same caliber.
Installing a Joist Support
While you are installing a joist support or a series of supports, you should add enough not only to make the floor strong but you should make sure that there will be no deflection. This is because deflection can cause a floor, like tile, to crack. There are a few websites with calculators that will allow you to enter your supports and it will let you know what kind of flooring you can install.
Also, when installing the joist supports you need to make sure that they are level. Attach joists using joist hangers. The project shouldn’t take you more than a few hours; however you should take a little extra time to double check to make sure that they are all level. This will ensure that your job was done correctly and will last for a long time.
