An iron staircase is one of the features in a home that usually requires very little maintenance and will last for many years.
Benefits of Iron
Wrought iron is one of those building materials that can last for generations. The beauty of this material is that it can be artistically crafted into wonderful designs to compliment almost any home decor. Leaves, flowers, gentle sweeping art nouveau curves, and simple twists and turns are all options.
Contemporary iron staircases are finished with a powder coat finish that makes it virtually rust free and requires little more than a quick wipe of a damp cloth to wipe away dust and dirt. In some cases, outdoor stairs might require a quick washing to remove seasonal accumulated dirt and grime from passing winter storms.
Occasionally, an iron staircase will need to have paint removed. While it can be a tedious task, it can be accomplished through the application of paint remover and scrubbing with a wire brush and paint thinner. Once the paint has been removed, it may be necessary to repair any rust spots or breaks in the iron with a bit of metal putty.
