Make an Over-the-Door Shoe Organizer
An over-the-door shoe organizer makes keeping track of shoes much easier. The extra storage space saved in wardrobes can be much better utilized.
Step 1 – Make Pockets for the Rods
On the long piece of fabric make a pocket at each end to accept the 2 inch diameter poles. The pocket will need a turn of just under 6.5 inches.
Step 2 – Make Two Short Seams
Create a seam along 2 short edges of the 4 pieces of fabric 2 feet 7 inches long. The seams will leave each piece with a finished length of 2 feet 6 inches.
Step 3 – Make a Long Seam
Create a seam along 1 long edge of the 4 pieces. This will reduce the width of each piece to 1 foot 2.5 inches.
Step 4 – Mark Shoe Holder Positions
Mark vertical lines on each of the 4 pieces 10 inches apart.
Step 5 – Fit One Side of the Gussets
Sew one of the triangular pieces of fabric along each of the lines and along each side of the material. Make sure that the 6 inch side of the triangular piece is flush with the seamed edge and that the longest side (the hypotenuse) is the one sewn to the material.
Step 6 – Mark Holder Positions
Mark horizontal lines on the long piece of fabric at intervals of 1 foot 2 inches.
Step 7 – Attach the Holders
Sew each of the four pieces of fabric with the triangular attachments to one of the horizontal lines creating a seam as you go.
Step 8 – Finish the Gussets
Sew the remaining long side of the triangular piece to the edges and vertical lines drawn 10 inches apart of the large piece. This can be done on the machine for the outside but the inner triangles might need to be sewn by hand.
Step 9 – Nearly Finished
You should now have a piece of fabric with 16 pockets. Each pocket should be 1 foot 2 inches by 10 inches.
Step 10 – Insert Rods
Insert the rods into the pockets you created. It is sometimes helpful to use wire staples to secure the fabric to the rods.
Step 11 – Fit the Hooks
Fit the flat over-door hooks to the upper rod. The method for this will depend upon the style of hook you bought.
Step 12 – Hang the Organizer
When you hang the organizer on the door it should not interfere with any of the door furniture.
This is a very simple organizer and can be used for other things than shoes. Each section can be personalized by using different colored materials.
