Make Your Own Wood Floor Cleaner

A woman cleans wood floors.

Different kinds of wood floors need different kinds of cleaning. You can make your own wood floor cleaner to get the right cleaner for your floor and save money.

Varnished Floors

Varnished and lacquered wood floors have a hard protective coating. Clean them with a gentle, oil-based soap and water to remove dirt and grime. Use a damp mop and dry the floor with a soft, clean cloth. Never leave standing water on a wood floor, as it can cause the wood to warp.

Bare Hard Wood Floors

To clean and protect bare hardwood floors, mix 1 teaspoon white or apple cider vinegar with 1 teaspoon olive oil in 1 quart of water. The vinegar will cut through dirt and grease, while the olive oil will add a nice shine to the wood. The vinegar will prevent the oil from making the floor slippery.

Black Tea Cleaning

Clean hardwood floors using black tea. It contains tannic acid, which leaves a great shine on wood. Pour boiling water in a 1 quart container with 3 tea bags and steep it for 15 to 20 minutes. Cool to room temperature and clean with a damp mop. Buff the floor dry with a soft cloth to bring out the shine.
