Making an Electric Fence Charger with an Ignition Coil
The use of an electric fence charger is vital to an electric fence system. Electric fences offer a more affordable and efficient option to conventional security fences. This kind of fencing is often safer when compared to traditional wire fencing. While some people think that making an electric fence charger is hard, but it is in fact easy to do.
Electric Fence Basics
A completed circuit is a prerequisite for electric current flow. Given that one component or one part is not attached to both sides of the circuit, it’s impossible for electricity to flow. This principle also strictly applies in electric fences. Electricity flows through the fence, creating a web-like structure of electrical supply. Meanwhile, a rod planted onto the ground controls the flow of electricity running from one fence to another. When something touches the fence or the area near the fence, it gets electrified. The electric charger serves as an important part of the electric fence. The following steps provide a step by step guide to make an electric charger assembly.
Note: It’s best to use an AC plug-in type fence charger.
Step 1 - Work on the Fence Charger
There are pre-arranged chargers or fence chargers that have pre-set features. The fence charger should be hung in an enclosed space. There are two considerations for choosing the area or the corner: proximity to the power source and accessibility. It’s important to refer to the AC-plug charger instructions for how to position it in place.
Step 2 - Use Ignition Coil
The steel rod should be hammered to the ground. The rod should be near where the pre-arranged charger is. Cut the two pieces of ignition coil. The length of the ignition coil should be around two feet. Use one piece to wrap around the base of the steel rod. The other end should be attached to the ground screw. The ground screw is mounted on the fence charger.
Step 3 - Use the Other Piece of Ignition Coil
Attach one end of the other piece of the cut ignition coil to the electric output screw, found on the fence charger. Attach the other end of the coil to the fence wire. Wrap the coil around the fence several times so it will charge.
Step 4 - Try the Connection
Attach the electric fence charger to the power supply. If you’re using an AC plug-in, the charger should be connected first to a standard 110V outlet. In case you opted for other power sources such as batteries, use a hook clamp to connect the charger to the battery. Make sure that the red clamp is connected to the positive post. Turn on the fence charger to see whether the set up works.
