Solar lights can save you a lot of money. You can save even more money if you know how to build them yourself. The following article will show you how to build a simple solar light that is commonly known as a sun jar. The principles you will learn can be modified for larger lighting projects. The sun jar is a nice project that can provide great lighting for camping trips and offer a cool night light.
Step 1 - The Solar Light
This project involves using a working solar light as the foundation for building your own solar light. Begin the project by taking the solar light you purchased apart. Be very careful so that you do not damage any of the components. You want to be extra careful with the solar panel and the LED light.
Step 2 – Preparing the Jar
You can use any type of jar with a tight lid. The most common jars are the mason jars. Cut a strip of tracing paper and place it inside the jar. The light will glow and reflect as well as shine through the paper to create a magical glow. You can also use glass frosting spray to frost the outside of the jar. Follow the instructions on the back of the can.
Take the components from the solar light and test fit them on the inside of the jar on the lid. The solar panel needs to be facing up so when the lid is close the sun will hit it. The LED light has to be facing the inside of the jar so that it can properly illuminate it.
Step 3 - Fitting it Together
When you test fit the solar light components to the top of the jar lid, you may find that it does not fit completely. You may have to move the parts of the solar light around to make them fit on the lid. The main things you need to remember is the placement of the LED light as well as the solar panel and that you can close the lid and latch it to the jar.
Once you have a configuration that works with the jar you are using, you can use the blu-tack to keep the components together. Once that is done you can attach the solar light components to the top of the jar using the same method.
Step 4 - Using the Solar Light
In order to use this light you simply close the lid, latch it and place the jar on a windowsill that gets a good amount of sunlight. You can also set it outside where you are sure sun will hit the solar cells. If you would like a color other than white you can paint the LED light or replace it with another colored LED.
