Measuring a Sliding Glass Door

What You'll Need
A 10 foot tape measure
Pen and paper to write down your calculations

The first thing that you will want to do when repairing or replacing your sliding glass door is to get the proper measurements and dimensions of the door before you try to replace it.

A sliding glass door can be an important change when doing interior home improvement and remodeling, as this is the focal point of your back end living space. It can bring new life to your back room or patio, and gives your home a more open and spacious feeling.

Step 1 - Measure the Opening

Go to your sliding glass door and take a measurement from the wall, left to right of the door, to the wall it is installed in. Do this across the bottom, middle and top. Then you will want to measure the height of the doors as well, again do three measurements one from top to bottom on the left, one in the middle and one on the right. You now have the total dimensions of your open door space.

Step 2 - Make Adjustments

When doing a door installation, you will want to deduct 3/4 inch from the highest number on your left to right measurements, and 1/2 inch on your biggest vertical measurement. This gives you a true measurement for your sliding glass door opening, and what you can get to replace it.
