Painting Polka Dots Room by Room

If you have never painted polka dots in a room before, it is easy to assume that there is only one style that will work for all decors.  In actuality, there are many different types of polka dots and color combinations that can work in a variety of rooms.  By taking the time to explore the options available, you will be able to pick a style that works best for your room’s decor.

Subtle Dots

If you like the look of whimsy that polka dots provide, but do not want bright polka dots across your living room walls, there is another option available.  Use a slightly lighter shade of paint than your wall color to paint the dots.  You can create large dots that are just a tad lighter than the walls, or paint small dots that catch the eye, but do not create a big swatch of color on the walls.  Using subtle dots is a great way to create a focal point without overpowering the space.

Wild and Crazy

Some of the best known polka dot designs are for teen girls’ rooms.  Choose bold, contrasting colors to best accent your daughter’s space.  Bright pink and lime green, or a citrusy orange paired with a deep navy blue, are perfect choices for a room that has bold color and personality.  When painting polka dots like this on a wall, it is best to start with a neutral background.  White or cream are often the best choice, but light grey or pale pink are also other good options.  The underlying color of the wall should compliment both polka dot colors and not create a harsh contrast with either of them.

Bathroom Bling

Brighten up your bathroom decor with some metallic polka dot designs.  Silver is a great choice, as you can readily find it in small acrylic paint bottles in your local craft store.  Play up the silver in the faucet handles and towel bars with silver polka dots on a white backdrop.  For added effect, mix the paint with a tablespoon of silver or gold glitter.  The shimmer that the glitter adds will only enhance the look of the metallic polka dot design.

Painted Polka Dots on Accent Pieces

Do not forget to add polka dot accents to your room’s accessories.  A plain lampshade can take on a whole new life with the addition of a polka dot fabric covering.  Paint polka dots on a wooden table or rocking chair to add color and whimsy in different ways.  Get creative with where and how you add polka dots to your accessories.

Do not rule out the idea of polka dots for even your most sophisticated of rooms.  There are many different ways that you can enhance the look of your room with these simple circles.  They can draw the eye and create a focal point in the room.  Even the most subtle of polka dots make a strong impact on a room’s decor.  Experiment with the look that you want to achieve and let polka dots help you create it.
