Preventing Water Damage on Bamboo Flooring

One of the great properties of bamboo flooring is that it is not as easily damaged by water as other hardwood floors are. The natural properties of bamboo are ever present in its hardness, strength, and water resistance in the flooring as it would be standing in the wild. This does not mean that it will not be damaged by any type of moisture. If you have bamboo flooring in your home, here is some information to help you prevent water damage.

1. Seal Underlayment

One of the first preventive measures that you should take when installing your bamboo flooring is to seal the subfloor. You can use a water vapor sheet, or a waterproofing sealant. The point is that you will want to keep moisture from building up from the bottom of the floor. This can cause mildew to grow without you even knowing it.

2. Seal Floor

Another great way to protect your bamboo flooring from water damage is to seal it with a waterproof sealer. This can be done immediately after installation so that it will set into the bamboo itself. However, you will want to periodically reseal it every few years to ensure that water cannot seep into any of the different cracks.

3. Wipe Up Immediately

When you are having guests over it is easy to have something spill on your brand new bamboo floor. You do not have to panic as you would with a tile, or other type of hardwood flooring. Bamboo has natural resistance to water, or other liquids, so you will be able to wipe it up fairly easily. A sponge with some warm water will remove the liquid and keep your bamboo flooring shiny.

4. Wipe Off Shoes

One of the biggest problems with wood flooring are shoes. When people are outside for any length of time they will gather up dirt, sand, another pieces of debris on their shoes. When they walk through your room they are transferring some of that to your floor. At times it will scratch the top coat and let water pass through. You are better off if you have an area where shoes can be removed before they travel over the surface.

5. Soak Up Water with Chamois

For anyone who has a pet you know that water is always being spilled out of their bowl, or from their mouths. The easiest way to keep your floor from any type of water damage from your pets is to place a chamois padding under their water bowls. As the water is spilled it will be absorbed by the chamois. You will want to rinse this out so that you do not have moisture sitting on the floor for a long period of time.

6. Dry After Mopping

Running a mop over your floor is a good way to keep your floors free from any dirt and stains. However, many people do not dry the floor after mopping. To prevent the water from seeping in between the cracks of the bamboo flooring and settling on the underlayment you should dry off the floor with a towel or dry mop.
