Cilantro has a distinctive fresh taste and can be used in a diverse range of dishes; appearing in numerous countries cuisine including American, Mexican and Indian. Both the foliage and seeds of the cilantro plant can be used in cooking to spice up a meal. In fact, the herb commonly known as coriander is actually the seed of the cilantro plant.
Coriander (cilantro seeds) is best stored in mild temperatures and should be kept in an air-tight container for freshness. Try using a glass jar with an air tight top to store your coriander seeds; it will keep the flavor of the seeds rich.
Depending upon the freshness of your coriander, you may be able to propagate cilantro without buying any seeds. Simply sandwich the coriander (or store-bought seeds) between several layers of paper towels and keep moist for several days. The seeds should crack open and produce a white sprout; this sprout is the beginning of the cilantro’s root system.
Plant the freshly sprouted seed with the white tip of the root facing down. Within a matter of days the seed will sprout on the surface and eventually grow into a tasty cilantro plant.
