Properly Install a Dryer Vent Booster Fan

Installing a dryer vent booster fan can not only extend the life of your dryer, but prevents fires caused by the excessive heat that is expelled. This is a job that requires very little knowledge or skill, and can easily be accomplished by the homeowner.

Tools and Materials Needed:

  • Cable wiring
  • Junction box
  • 16 gauge conductor
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire caps
  • Duct tape
  • Sheet metal screws

Step 1 - Remove the Old Dryer Ducts

Most booster fans need to be located at least 6 feet from the dryer outlet, so the first step is to remove the old dryer ducting and locate the proper place to install the booster, making sure that it is far enough away from the dryer to work effectively. When installing the new ducts, avoid the basic plastic or flexible foil materials and use only metal dryer ducts.

Step 2 - Install the Ducts

Measure the distance needed from the dryer to the booster fan, and install the new metal ducts. Make sure to install any corners that are needed without crimping the material, carefully cut any pieces that you need with a small hacksaw or metal power saw, and always make sure that the joints are tight and secure so that the escaping fumes do not leak out into the house.

Step 3 - Install the Booster

After the ducting is laid down and secured, install the booster. Attach it with sheet metal screws and insert it into the ducts. Use clamps around all the edges to ensure that the seal is tight. If the particular unit that you are installing has a basic outlet cord, plug it into the wall. If the unit that you are using has to be wired in, then do so. If you have any basic knowledge of wiring a house than you can do this job yourself, but if you are unfamiliar with household wiring a licensed electrician should be called. Remember to check your local building codes to find out what stipulations and rules apply. Some areas require that only a licensed professional attach the wiring, while other areas are much more relaxed about the procedure.

Step 4 - Install the Ending Ducts and Vent Cap

Continue laying any ducts that need to be installed in order for the vent to go all the way outside, and then install the vent cap onto the outer wall. Never vent a dryer into the house. Even though kits are available to allow you to do this, avoid taking shortcuts. Always vent a dryer outside of the house. As with all the other joints, make sure that the cap fits tightly onto the duct and use clamps to prevent any slippage.

Installing a dryer vent booster is an easy task that can save you money, increase the life of your dryer, and prevent the chance of the dryer fumes starting a fire. It may also lower the cost of your house insurance because of the safety features that is involved with having one installed. So, take a few hours out of your day and install a dryer vent booster today.
