If a crack appears in your rear view mirror, a replacement is in order. Unfortunately, the entire fixture will have to be replaced. The steps below demonstrate how to successfully replace the cracked rare view mirror.
Step 1 – Getting Ready
Start off on the rear view mirror repair, by first wearing work gloves. This will prevent the adhesive from sticking to your fingers. Roll out a plastic sheet on the floor of the car to avoid messing up the carpet.
Step 2 – Examining the Problem
If the rear view mirror has developed a crack, the only option is to replace the entire mirror. For this you will have to dismantle the rear view mirror fixture. The fixture is generally stuck in place by adhesives; use a loosening agent to weaken the adhesive's grip.
Step 3 – Caution
After you remove the original rear view mirror, make it a point to mark the position where the mirror was attached. Use a tape to do so. This will provide a guide while mounting the new mirror.
Step 4 – Removing the Rear View Mirror
After the loosening agent is applied, let it sit for a few minutes. Then, remove the fixture from the car. Make sure to clean the area where the rear view mirror was mounted.
Step 5 – Examining the new Mirror
The next step is to attach the new rear view mirror. All rear view mirrors come with a button or an arm that acts as the contact point between the mirror and the windshield.
Step 6 – Cleaning the Button
Before you do anything with the button, it has to be cleaned. Use a cleaning solution to wipe away any dirt or oil on the surface of the button. Make sure not to touch the button with bare hands after that.
Step 7 – Cleaning the Windshield
Before you attach the button to the windshield the surface has to be cleaned. A clean surface assures a strong fix, as the adhesive holds on better. Rid the surface of any dirt or previous traces of adhesive. Use a cleaning solvent for this purpose. Roll the windows down and let the area dry.
Step 8 – Adding adhesive
Adhesive has to be now applied to the button. The repair kit comes with an adhesive tube, which contains two components. When you squeeze the tube the components get mixed. Apply evenly on the top surface of the button.
Step 9 – Fixing the Button
After cleaning the surface, it is time to fix the button. Place it on the marked area and press the button against the windshield. Clean off the excess adhesive that seeps out. Apply pressure on the button and hold it in place for a few minutes. Let it rest for a while.
Step 10 – Attaching the mirror
After 15 minutes or so attach the mirror to the button. The slot on the mirror should cup the button. This completes the rear view mirror attachment process.
Step 11 – Check
Check the rear view mirror repair by trying to move it around. You should be able to adjust the mirror without any interference.
