How to Save Space and Create Storage With a Recessed Medicine Cabinet

A recessed bathroom medicine cabinet adds much-needed storage space to a small bathroom. Follow these steps to install one in a single afternoon.
Step 1 - Find the Studs
The medicine cabinet must be hung between 2 studs. If the cabinet doesn’t fit between them, the studs must be braced.
Step 2 - Mark the Spot
Use a pencil to outline the area where for the cabinet.
Step 3 - Cut a Small Hole
Use a drywall saw to cut a small hole in area you have outlined. The hole only needs to be large enough to peer through the wall.
Step 4 - Check for Wires and Plumbling
Make sure there is no electrical wiring or plumbing in the way. Damaging either would be catastrophic. If there isn’t enough room to install the cabinet, you will need to call a professional or consider a wall mounted unit.
Step 5 - Cut the Marked Area
Cut around the marking you’ve made. Use caution to avoid cutting the opposite wall, too.
Step 6 - Build the Frame
Nail the pre-measured lumber to the studs on both sides. It will serve as a frame for the medicine cabinet.
Step 7 - Insert Cabinet
Once the frame is built, you can slide the medicine cabinet into place. Level the cabinet to make sure it's even. Open and close the doors to ensure they have enough room.
Step 8 - Drill Into Place
Drive screws through the pre-drilled holes to secure the cabinet to the frame.
Ensure that your cabinet is completely secured within the wall before using it. As long as you’ve secured it to the frame and the frame is secured to the studs, your cabinet will be safe and ready for storage.
