Bathroom refinishing can be an expensive proposition if you're having it done by professionals. However, there is no way to avoid this expense, especially if your bathroom is in a very shabby state. If it's only your bathroom's vanity that needs refinishing, you need not part with your hard earned money so easily.
Assess Your Bathroom Vanity Cabinet
Assess the condition of your vanity cabinet and see if it indeed can be part of your bathroom refinishing project. If your vanity cabinet is made of plastic or laminated particle board, there is not much that you can do apart from slapping on another coat of paint. In fact, if you have such a cabinet and it's in really bad shape, you should think about getting a new one. If you own an old fashioned solid wood cabinet, you should definitely look at bathroom refinishing as an option.
There are a number of options that are available when it comes to refinishing a bathroom vanity:
- Cleaning: This is the simplest and most economical method of refinishing your bathroom vanity. A thorough cleaning to remove all the accumulated dirt, grime, water stains and dried soap and toothpaste can do wonders and make your vanity cabinet look as good as new. This holds good for the rest of the bathroom, too. Before going in for bathroom refinishing, give your bathroom a thorough cleaning and see it look as good as new.
- Painting: If mere cleaning is not enough, painting is a good option for refinishing your bathroom vanity. Do check with your local hardware store to see which type of paint is compatible with your bathroom cabinet. Keep in mind that in addition to paint, you will also have to buy some paint thinner, primer, sandpaper, paintbrushes and protective equipment such as gloves, safety goggles and masks. Painting is best avoided if the weather is too cold and clammy.
- Staining: Staining is a good option to make wooden cabinets look different and new. Buy a staining paste or solution from your hardware store and apply it onto your bathroom vanity. This is a relatively simple procedure. Keep in mind that you may have to use more than one application of the staining agent to achieve the desired effect.
- Glazing: Glazing can completely change the look of your bathroom vanity. Glazing is basically a chemical that alters the appearance of the wood. It can be used to give your vanity a cabinet a shining finish, a deeper color or highlight the designs inherent in the wood.
Whichever option you choose for your bathroom refinishing project, remember to read and follow all the safety instructions when working with paints and chemicals. Ensure that the room which you're working in is well ventilated. Avoid any direct sources of heat or flame near these chemicals.
