Repairing Bahama Shutters

Bahama shutters, also known as Bermuda shutters, are designed to be used during the extremes of weather, protecting homes and buildings from hurricanes, storms, and tornadoes. During this protection, your Bahama shutters can sometimes be damaged, and this is a difficult thing to fix, as you need to ensure that the repair is strong enough to survive another stormy day. When you are considering whether to repair your Bahama shutters, it is worth considering the expense of repairing them versus the expense of buying and installing a new set. if you still want to repair them, there are some things that you can do.

Repairing Wooden Bahama Shutters

Wooden Bahama shutters are a popular and familiar kind of shutters, but they can be very difficult to repair. You need to assess the damage first. If the problem is something such as a hinge coming away from the wall, then you may have a better success in repairing it, but if you have a broken panel, then this can be harder work.

Look at cutting out the broken panel, and patching it with a similar piece of wood. The downside to this solution is that the repaired part is necessarily weaker than the original storm shutters, so you could end up having to repeatedly repair the break. You could also remove that side of the shutter, and make a fresh panel using new wood. This would be stronger, although you would have to measure it carefully to ensure that the original and the replacement fitted together neatly.

Repairing Metal Bahama Shutters

Another popular type of Bahama shutter is the aluminum shutter. These are more durable than the wooden shutter, although they can also be damaged by high winds. Again, the problem is assessing the damage. Hinges and catches can easily be replaced. Dents and dings in the aluminum shutter can also be quickly solved by banging the dent with a rubber hammer. If you are not sure about repairing the shutters yourself, you could take it along to a car repair garage, and see if they will knock out the dents for you.

Dents can usually be pressed out using a hammer. Other types of metal can also be cured of dents in a similar manner, simply by pressing out the dent from the other side. Similarly, scratches can be repaired by adding a new layer of paint to the surface. If you have a problem with a hole that was made in the metal shutter, then you should start by removing any dents or similar damage, and then patching over the hole using another piece of metal. The patch must be of the same type of material as the original shutter, and you will need to use metal screws to screw the patch into the metal. Make sure that it is on securely, otherwise it could be damaged again in the next high wind.
