Roller Spring vs. Magnetic Catch Hardware for Cabinets

Cabinets with catch hardware.

When installing cabinets, you have the choice between different types of catch hardware, each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Roller Spring

The roller spring catch is the more traditional style for cabinets. Its advantages include a smooth close without the worry of damaging the wood and a relatively clean opening motion. If the door is not closed hard enough, the roller springs will rebound the cabinet door and it will not close properly. This can be an issue if you are storing valuables in your cabinet that you want to remain hidden.

Magnetic Catch

The magnetic catch looks like a small metallic square on the inside of your cabinet. With this type of catch hardware, the door will close automatically up to a certain point due to the magnetic force. However, if you close the door too abruptly, you risk damaging the wood since the magnetic square has less of a shock-absorbing effect.
