Gussets are a nice addition to a sewing project, allowing the piece to have more room in it. These are nice for pants and other clothing items which need to be adjusted.
Making Room for Gussets
When you want to create a gusset, you need to have some fabric on hand. Ideally, you should use the same fabric as the clothing you are gusseting, from the inner lining or some other inconspicuous area. Cut out a small triangle piece which will unfold to be a diamond.
Adding the Fabric to the Clothing
- Take the fabric and pin it where you want to gusset. The longer sides of the diamond will be pinned to the sides, while the narrow side will attach to the top and bottom of the area. The back waistband of pants or a skirt works well and it difficult to notice.
- Sew the piece of fabric into place with basting. The edges should line up as well as possible to make it invisible. If the edges don’t line up, remove the stitches and try again.
Gussets allow for more room at the waistline, helping to extend the life and the usefulness of your clothing. If more room is needed, you just add more gussets.
