Terms of the Trade: What is a Junction Box?

terminal box with wiring combined

Junction boxes are protective enclosures for electric wire connections. Shielding these electrical junction points protects the wires from damage, especially in outdoor areas, and protects people from potential contact with hazardous materials, which can cause shocks.

Usually made from plastic or metal, junction boxes are often designed to be mounted on a wall or a ceiling. Some can be fit under floors, tucked behind control panels, or even mostly encased in plaster or concrete.

Some junction boxes feature terminals to facilitate connections between wires, others are just empty cases.
