Tips for Adding Glaze to Kitchen base Cabinets

Adding glaze to your kitchen base cabinets can give them an entirely new look. Depending upon how you apply the glaze and if you texture it, countless design styles can be achieved.

  • Glaze
  • Latex craft paint
  • Brush
  • Sponge
  • Comb
  • Rags
  • Rubber gloves
  • Container to mix glaze

Step 1: Basic Glaze

The basic way to apply glaze is to simply brush it over the base color on your cabinets. First you must mix the glaze. Pour a bit of glaze into the container and then put in a few drops of latex craft paint to tint it to the desired color. You can also use a few drops of the paint you used to paint the base. If the glaze is too thick, you can thin it with a bit of water. Glaze should be thin.

You can also apply the glaze at it comes to give a hazed affect to the cabinets.

Step 2: Patterned Glaze

Apply the glaze as instructed above, but while the glaze is wet you can touch a sponge against it to create patterns. Wipe the sponge off as it collects glaze so you won't create a muddy affect.

Another technique is to drag a plastic hair comb through the wet glaze. You can do straight lines or move the comb to make patterns.

Always wear rubber gloves to protect your hands since glazing is a messy job.
