If you live in an area that experiences high rainfall, or you have a basement that is prone to flooding, installing a pedestal pump is simple and will save you quite a bit of money in flood damage control.

Purchasing the Pedestal Sump Pump

There are several types of sump pumps available. A pedestal pump can have more benefits, depending on your needs. A pedestal tends to be noisier, but it costs far less than other types. Along with the purchase of the pump, you need to purchase a sump liner.

The pumps are available in different pumping capacities. Pump capacity is measured by the gallons per hour the pump is able to discharge. To find what size pump you need, take measurements of your basement.

Where to Install the Sump Pump

Before installation, you will need to locate the sewer, water, and other utility lines that run through your home. Dig into the floor of the basement to install a sump pump. Having these lines marked will prevent you from breaking through any lines.

The pump must be located near electrical outlets, preferably on an exterior wall. The outlet must be a GFCI protected circuit to prevent circuits from blowing. If the pump cannot be placed near an existing outlet, an electrician can easily install a new one for you.

Discharge Pipe

Excess water from your basement will get pumped drained into a discharge pipe. The discharge pipe will carry the water outside the home. This pipe attaches directly to the sump pump. It will need to be routed from the basement to your yard then away from your house.

Digging for the Sump Pump

When you start digging for your sump pump, use a jackhammer to break through the concrete floor. Wear eye protection and follow the directions for the jackhammer to prevent blowing any fuses or circuits. Depending on the pump you choose, the depth of the hole will vary. The manufacturer’s directions will provide you with a recommended depth for the liner. The liner is sealed with concrete to keep it secure.


Once your hole is dug, and the liner is placed, install the pump. The pump needs to be attached to the discharge pipe. The pipe will need to be cemented into place. A diverter on the pipe will help to ensure the water flows away from your home and not towards it.
