Transforming Your Garage into a Garage Studio
If you are adding a garage and want to include a garage studio or are simply remodeling your current garage, here are some ideas to think about as you get started on your transformation.
1 – Before You Start
The first thing you need to think about, whether you are going to build a garage or remodel one is the permits that are needed. No matter which way you go, it will be new construction and you will need to have a building permit.
You will also have to be sure that your design and plan follows all of the local codes and requirements.
2 – Doors and Windows
If you are remodeling a current garage you will need to think about the entryways. Will you be keeping a current attachment to the home or adding new entrances? If you plan to add a doorway where the garage door was there are many options. French doors are often nice and offer great lighting.
If you have no windows and you want to add them, think about placement. This is especially important if you are intending only a portion of the garage be used for a studio.
3 – Electricity
If you are remodeling a current garage, you probably already have electricity. The question will be what kind of lighting you desire for a studio. This might require the expertise of an electrician.
4 – Plumbing
Many garages already have pipes for plumbing so adding a bathroom, if you desire, may be easier than you think. Depending on what your studio will be used for, plumbing may not be needed. More often than not, you will want to at least have a sink available; particularly if your studio will be for art or gardening purposes.
5 – Walls
If you plan to use only a portion of an already constructed garage, then part of your task will be to decide where to place walls. This can also be the fun part as you decide on the type of walls you want.
In addition to choosing a color though, you will have to be sure the walls are insulated. If you plan to use the studio all year, you will want to retain warmth as much as possible. Another solution may be to add a portable heater of some type or a woodstove.
6 – Floors
Another consideration is the flooring of the garage. Typically garage floors are concrete which can be cold and uninviting in a studio. Carpeting may run the expense of the project up. You can add throw rugs or you can even just paint the floor in a fun design or color. It’s really going to depend on how you intend to use the space.
7 – Built-ins
No matter what the use of the studio will be, it is always a good idea to include some built-in shelving, storage, and closet or desk space. This actually won’t take that much extra effort and will be well worth any expense.
