There are several things to keep in mind when using a portable sump pump. A sump pump is basically a low pressure pump that moves water from one location to another one. It works with an engine or a motor driven impeller that is in a very tight fitting case.
With the help of the case’s inlet and outlet, the exiting water will be routed through pipe or tubing into a new location. Usually that means a ditch or a storm drain. A portable sump pump is typically used when there is flooding. Follow these instructions to operate a portable sump pump.
Step 1 - Where to Place It
Portable sump pumps are perfect for places that infrequently flood. They are the most inexpensive type of sump pump and can easily clean up small floods. Whenever you experience a flood, you will need to the pump close to the water, but not in it. Remember that these sump pumps need an electrical outlet.
It is also important to remember that they push water as opposed to pull it. That is why it is placed near the floor, so that it does not have to pull-up the water into the impeller.
Step 2 - How to Use Temporarily
There are a few things that you will need to keep in mind when you are using these types of sump pumps. They are quite different than permanent models; therefore, they must be treated differently.
The first thing to remember is that they are not meant for very big jobs or to be use very often. If you experience large floods frequently, then you will need to get a permanent model.
Keep in mind that sometimes, they do not come with valves attached. That means that you need to be sure that you have your portable sump pump turned-off as it empties. Allowing your portable sump pump to run dry will quickly burn out the motor.
Step 3 - Warnings
Portable sump pumps are not a permanent solution. They are meant to be used temporarily to prevent damage until you are able to come to a solution to the problem. Also remember that it is always a good idea to go with a larger pump. A smaller pump is more likely to burnout while you are using it.
Be sure that you keep your portable sump pump stored in a place where it can be easily removed when you need it. Usually, a flood is no time to have to go searching for your sump pump.
