Metal flashing is important for your chimney to keep it from leaking. Using or installing this metal flashing is not a difficult task if you have the right instructions. Here is a quick guide to help you through this project:
Step 1 – Cut Flashing and Bend
Begin at the front base and use tin snips to cut. Make sure that you use a measuring tape and allow for about 4 inches on either side so that it is 8 inches or so longer than the front of your chimney. Once you have the piece ready to go, you can bend it around the sides of the chimney. Do the same process for the corners of the chimney as well.
Step 2 - Fasten Shingles
As you go along, you will need to fasten each of the shingles over the metal flashing. Use a hammer and galvanized nails to secure them. Be sure to get around the edges as well. Use an angle grinder in order to cut grooves into the mortar joints. Be sure to use the cap flashing so that you know where you need to cut.
Step 3 - Install Cap Flashing
Now you can cut the cap flashing and bend it so that it secures around the corners of the chimney. Use a drill to make a hole in the corner and insert an expanding plastic anchor.
Step 4 - Caulk
Once you are finished you will need to seal all of the flashing. Use caulk and a caulking gun to get around every corner of the flashing.
