The primary advantage of using rigid foam insulation for soundproofing purposes inside the house is that the process can be carried out by a beginner, giving that one has a dependable set of instructions and the right tools in hand. Soundproofing the walls with rigid foam insulation is an excellent idea as it is an extremely effective material that also brings with it a number of other benefits such as being resistant to fires and infestation by pests. Read on to find out how to use rigid foam insulation to soundproof a room.

Step 1 - Removing Moisture

Prior to beginning the soundproofing process it is important to ensure that the walls are in good condition. Any moisture issues being created by leaking, water seeping through the ceiling and need to be address before the soundproofing is carried out. If the problem is a small one a touch of waterproof paint will be enough to coat the area. For a more advanced problem calling in an expert is advised.

Step 2 - Fixing Furring Strips

The next step involves affixing the furring strips onto the wall. These strips have to be attached in pieces of 2 by 2 inches. Place the pieces 16 inches apart in an on-center position on the wall.

Step 3 - Align Strips in Straight Line

Once the furring strips have been attached take the level and make sure that the strips have been arranged in a balanced and proportionate manner. In case there are some discrepancies in the placement the shims can be used to straighten out the same.

Step 4 - Cut and Fix Insulation Foam

The fourth step involves cutting out the insulation foam. It is imperative to measure out the pieces to the exact dimensions as they should go in snugly within the furring strips.

Once the rigid insulation foam has been cut out, fix in the individual pieces in the spaces between the furring strips. Make sure that each piece is fixed in as tightly as possible with only a marginal amount of space left between the strips and the foam.

Step 5 - Fill Empty Spaces

To increase the level of efficiency one can use tape or caulk any blank spaces left between the foam pieces and the furring strips.

Step 6 - Fix Plastic Sheet

The final step involves taking a sheet of heavy plastic and affixing it atop the foam structure. The plastic sheets act as a blockade against any vapors and further strengthen the insulation sheets. The plastic should be stapled to the foam and not to the furring strips to avoid tears.
