Many modern kitchens are made with stainless steel sheets. A stainless steel kitchen backsplash is often found in a typical modern kitchen. Many appliances on the market are made with stainless steal, hence it makes sense to opt for a stainless steel kitchen backsplash. Stainless steal sheets are not difficult to install, but you may need a professional to do the cutting. There are various pros and cons to stainless steel sheets, therefore in this article, you will find some useful information to help you make an informed choice.
Design
Many restaurants have been using stainless steel sheets in their kitchens for years, in order to give a shiny and clean appearance. The problem was, they were constrained to use only smooth sheets, since that was the only design on the market. With the help of today’s technology, this is not now the case. There are many different designs to choose from, and you can even create your own design. You can also try to combine different materials with stainless steel, such as marble or glass, to create a highly polished, ultramodern look. Remember to compliment the materials with the theme of the kitchen, also taking into account the appliances.
Cost
The cost of stainless steel depends on the size and design. If you are opting for a complicated design, then it will get expensive. On the other hand, if you want to create a small and simple design, then it shouldn’t be very expensive but it won’t be exactly cheap either. You will have to pay approximately $20 per square foot.
Care and Cleaning
Stainless steel backsplashes don’t need a lot of care. On the other hand, it is advisable to clean them frequently to maintain their shiny look. All you need to clean such backsplashes is a soft cloth, some soap and warm water. Make sure you dry them with another soft cloth, to prevent water spots from forming. Nowadays, there are also specially made cleaning products for stainless steel kitchen tops and backsplashes. Try to be careful as much as possible not to scratch them, which is why it is better to use a soft cloth. Wipe off splatters of acidic food immediately, otherwise it may cause some discoloration.
Before Installation
To install a stainless steel backsplash, you need various tools, such as a caulking gun, a putty knife, construction adhesive, Kraft paper and sandpaper. Always wear safety clothing, such as safety glasses and gloves. It is better to leave the cutting of the stainless steel backsplash to a professional. Tape the Kraft paper onto the wall and cut off the pieces where the socket outlets are located. The Kraft paper is the template on which the stainless steel backsplash will be made.
Installation
Cover the countertop with an old blanket or newspaper, to prevent the sharp steel edges from damaging it. Use the adhesive to stick the backsplash to the wall. Use the caulking gun and the putty knife to spread the adhesive. Try to avoid as much air bubbles as possible by using a rolling pin. Make sure that you hold the backsplash firmly to the wall until it hardens. Use tape to help you hold the backsplash until the adhesive has dried. Use some alcohol spirit to get rid of any adhesive marks.
Stainless steel is quite durable, easy to clean and heat resistant. The obvious drawback of stainless steel is that it scratches easily, hence you have to treat it gently. Unlike other materials such as, brass, copper etc, stainless steel doesn’t fade over time. Consequently it won’t need to be polished.
