There are two primary types of gas fireplace logs—vented and ventless logs. Both types of logs have their own advantages and benefits. Both are unique in their design and how they work.
1. Vented Log Basics
Vented logs have been on the market for over twenty years. These gas fireplace logs are the most popular on the market today. Vented logs create the most realistic fire when compared to real wood fires. They have a yellow flame and the majority of them also have glowing embers. This adds an extra touch of realism. Vented logs have to be used in a fireplace that has a chimney which allows the heat and smoke to be carried up and out of the house. They cannot safely be used in a fireplace that does not have a chimney. This is why they are known as vented logs.
2. Ventless Log Basics
Ventless logs are gas fireplace logs that do not have to have a chimney. Ventless logs are often a more economically sound decision. They are also more efficient than vented logs. Ventless logs create a large amount of heat and care should be taken to make sure that all areas around and above the fireplace are heat resistant. If they are not, you may have to remove them to be able to use a ventless log safely. Ventless logs often do not have the realistic look that vented logs have. Ventless logs have to be placed in a certain way and cannot be rearranged or moved.
3. Heat Factor
Ventless gas fireplace logs are more effective in terms of heating. They do not require a chimney, so the heat is all retained within your home. You are not losing heat out the chimney like you are with a vented log. If you are using your gas fireplace you as your sole source of heat, a ventless log will do a better job at heating. They are able to effectively heat the room or home and you are not wasting gas heating the outdoors.
4. Ease of Use
Both vented and ventless gas fireplace logs are easy to use. There is no need for cutting wood, trying to get a fire going, and spending a great deal of time just to enjoy your fire. With gas fireplace logs, all you have to do is turn them on. You can come home from a long day at work and enjoy a nice fire within minutes.
There are benefits to both vented and ventless gas fireplaces. There are things to consider and keep in mind when you are deciding on a fireplace log to purchase. If you want the fireplace mainly for heat, you would be better suited with a ventless log. If you want a realistic fire, vented is better. Both are ideal in terms of ease of use. There is less mess and less hassle with gas fireplace logs than with traditional wood fireplace logs. It is all a matter of personal preference and the location of your fireplace.
