What are the pros and cons of using propane gas logs?

There are numerous benefits and disadvantages in using propane gas logs. The biggest advantage may be the cleanliness of the propane fireplace. Unlike a wood burning fire which produces ash and soot, the propane gas burns relatively cleanly and leaves no unpleasant odors behind. The convenience of not having to chop or haul wood is another obvious advantage. The need for a chimney is eliminated, making a fireplace possible even in small homes, and the log sets appear relatively realistic. There are some disadvantages as well, such as the expense of the propane. Installation can also prove to be more difficult and time consuming than the installation of a wood burning fireplace.
