A growing trend in paint is the use of epoxy spray paint. It is a paint that combines a hardener into resin to create a tough, waterproof surface. This spray paint has the ability to resist stains, household cleaners, grease, and grime, and it can adhere to a wide range of materials. No wonder it is increasing in popularity. There are a couple of important things to consider when buying epoxy spray paint.

Your Project

There are several types of epoxy spray paint available for purchase. There are a number of companies that make epoxy spray paint in a wide variety of colors. The two most common are Epoxy All Weather Paint and Epoxy Appliance Paint. They are both an ideal choice for smaller projects. Epoxy all-weather paint is perfect for wooden materials like cabinet doors, bar tops, boats, and indoor stools. Of course, epoxy appliance paint is good to use on household appliances.

Is It True Epoxy Spray Paint?

To make sure you get all the qualities of epoxy paint, you must make sure you are buying true epoxy paint. True epoxy spray paint has two parts that require mixing. When shopping, pay attention to the can and look for an indication there are actually a hardener and a resin. There should be some type of device or tool for mixing. For example, one brand of epoxy spray paint has a plunger that is inserted into a tube at the base of the can. This releases the hardener into the resin so the paint can begin to cure.

How Much Do You Need?

Before you begin your project it is important to figure out how much paint you will need. You don’t want to have to stop during your project and go back to the store. Not only is this inconvenient, but the paint you already sprayed is also drying. When you go back to finish the job, uneven surfaces from overspray and unpainted spots from under spray are very likely to occur. When all else fails, it is better to buy an extra can of paint than to not have enough.

Directions

Read the back of your epoxy spray paint can before you buy. Some have special instructions on preparing your surface, recoat times, and how to mix the epoxy. If the instructions seem too difficult or inconvenient, then you should consider buying epoxy paint that is easier to use. There is paint out there that has no preparation except starting with a clean surface and using a tool to mix the hardener and resin.

Color

Epoxy spray paint comes in an array of colors. If you are redecorating, you might buy a few cans in the colors that you are considering. Take a piece of scrap wood and spray each color. Compare them when it dries. Buy the color that closely matches the color you are looking for. The same process can be used for appliances, except instead of testing on scrap wood, consider testing on a scrap piece of metal or on the actual appliance where the color won’t be seen.
