Determining which size floor tile you will need depends on a few factors. It is important to consider the look you want to display to yourself, family, and guests. In addition, the floor space that requires the tile can determine the size you choose. Following these steps will help you to make a great decision.

Step 1 - Plot Out Your Room

Measure the square footage of your floorspace by measuring the length and width of the room and multiply the 2. Once you have this determined, pull out the graph paper and ruler and make a scale model of your floorspace. A good rule of thumb is to make each 2 squares equal 1-foot. Draw the perimeter and then block out the tiles the way you would like them. Make a few templates of the perimeter of your floor so that you can try out different ideas on each to compare.

Step 2 - Consider Tile Size

Floor tiles come in several different sizes and shapes. The standard shape is square, either 12-square inches or 16-square inches, but you do have choices of 4, 6 8, 13, 18, and even 24-square inches as well. There are larger or smaller tiles available, and many textures to think of, too. Depending on whether you've decided on a square pattern, a random pattern, or a diagonal or staggered look to your floor tile motif you will have to make sure you have enough to cut for edges.

Step 3 - Other Conditions Determining Floor Tile Size

When considering tile size you also have to consider the distance you wish between tiles for grout. The more the grout space, the less the tile size will be. You will also have to consider anything attached to the floor like an island. You wish to have an aesthetically pleasing look to your floor tile without overcoming the entire appeal of the area with a busy installation of too small or overly large tiles on your floor. The focal point of your room should be the entire appearance and not just a single part of the room. If your room is large then a larger tile will be a good choice. If you are tiling a small hallway, foyer, bathroom, or other smaller area then a smaller tile, 6x6-inches to 12x12-inches would be the best choice.

Step 4 - Selecting Floor Tile at the Store

When you have decided on a plan, figured out your floorspace and have chosen the color that you wish, then you can go to your local home improvement store or specialty store and begin looking for that tile that will fit your requirements perfectly. If you have opted to use different size floor tiles in order to create a more artistic look, be sure you have figured out how many of each tile you will need before you go to the store.
